Update: The New Baker Play Area is Open!

The new creative play area at Baker Park Reserve, Maple Plain, is now open! Highlights include a new signature climbing feature that is almost nine feet tall and over 70 feet in diameter and a 100-foot zip line feature. The play area was designed to provide inclusive play experiences and can accommodate kids of all ages.

The previous play area at Baker Park Reserve opened in 1977 and was the first one in the Three Rivers system. Loved and well-used by generations of kids, the original play area was showing its age and was identified for replacement. Design of the new play area began in 2019; the design process included public engagement using pop-up events at the play area and campground and online input through an interactive map.

More than 600 kids and parents provided input on what they would like to see in the design of the new play area. Their feedback helped select the huge new climbing structure that is the first of its kind in the United States, and they clearly identified that the zip line was a beloved element of the original play area that should be re-created in the new one.

The play area is open daily from 9 a.m. – sunset. A grand opening celebration is scheduled for Saturday, June 12, 2021 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

We are very excited to use this new play area! When is the opening date now that it is Spring 2021?

Dedicating so much space to the climbing net is unwise. Whoever most aggressive kids are on it will make it unappealing for a lot of other kids, the nets will tear and need replacing quickly, and that's a very specific use - one that usually requires some parental supervision so it will be even more bodies in it

Also, many of the spaces, especially for 2-5 year olds, are single application object. Why are there not more multiuse, multikid objects such as structures they can run in and out of (e.g., 2 level structure with windows, pulley/movable devices, etc.)
